Restaurants - Kampala (Uganda)

Kampala has a vast variety of dining options, from the cheap to the very fancy (and very expensive).

Everywhere you go in the city, you will stumble upon signs for little "hole-in-the-wall" establishments. These rarely have a menu, so you have to ask what’s available on the day.

A firm local favourite is the famous "Rolex" street snack, which is a chapati (pancake) wrapped around an omelette, with cabbage and tomatoes.

Fang Fang Kampala

Fang Fang

Surprisingly, there are lot of Chinese restaurants in Kampala, but this must surely be one of the best! Serving a full selection of Chinese classics (like crispy fried prawns with ginger and garlic), there are two Fang Fang branches in the city, one with an attached hotel and one in downtown Kampala, with indoor seating and a roof terrace.

Mamba Point Kampala

Mamba Point

Make your way to Mamba Point in Nakasero for the best in Italian dining. This authentic restaurant serves up home-made pasta and exquisite desserts, like chocloate truffle torte and lime syllabub.

Masala Chaat House Kampala

Masala Chaat House

If you’re fan of vegetarian Indian cuisine, be sure to visit the Masala Chaat House opposite the National Theatre. Featuring genuine southern Indian flavours and affordable prices, it is no wonder that this restaurant is frequented by a large number of local Indian nationals.

Do try a masala dosa — a large savoury crêpe stuffed with potato cooked with onion and curry leaves. If you’re not a lover of vegetarian cooking, Masala also offers a variety of meat and fish dishes.

Le Chateau Kampala

Le Chateau

If you are looking to indulge, this is the place to do it! Serving up the best steaks in Kampala, as well as French specialities like frogs’ legs and escargots (snails), Le Chateau is very fashionable among well-to-do Ugandans. It is also renowned for the best ice cream in town.

Fez Brasserie Kampala

Fez Brasserie

This restaurant is situated in the grounds of the Emin Pasha hotel, and offers an exciting fusion menu featuring flavours from all five continents. The menu is constantly evolving, but form local favourites include the aubergine tower with goat’s cheese, the Moroccan lamb and the Cuban spatchcock poussin (chicken).
