One of South Africa’s popular seaside towns, Port Elizabeth (or “PE” for short) sits on Algoa Bay on the Sunshine Coast. It’s lapped by the warm Indian Ocean so it’s great for sunbathing, swimming and surfing. It’s also a good base for some excellent wildlife viewing or exploring the desert-like Karoo inland.

The city itself doesn’t have much to offer tourists, but some regeneration projects have brought fresh life and spirit to areas like Richmond Hill, with upmarket shops, restaurants and bars. If you hear people speak of Nelson Mandela Bay, they’re referring to PE, the satellite industrial towns of Uitenhage and Despatch, and the townships around them.
