Visit Kimberley
About Kimberley
Once the centre of South Africa’s diamond mining rush, Kimberley is now an unassuming city that serves as the gateway to the Northern Cape province. That’s a vast outdoor adventure territory perfect for robust types who find it huge fun to spend all day driving through kilometres of starkly stunning scenery. The province covers almost a third of the country but has only two people for every square kilometre.
It’s a tourism hotspot of a kind too, with temperatures cracking a blistering 40°C in summer. The city is a good starting point for hiking, biking, fishing, camping and whitewater rafting adventures. And spotting flamingoes.
Travel Tips
You’re going to need a car, and with the Northern Cape being a barren sort of place, go for a 4x4. Kimberley airport also has taxi service available on request.
The Summer from October to March is very hot, so it’s best to visit in Spring or Autumn.
