About Nelspruit

The great thing about Nelspruit is how easy it is to reach loads of excellent attractions in the area. But stay a while in the town itself, because Nelspruit is a pleasant place with lots of interesting things to do. Then head off to explore the wonderful Kruger National Park and the stunning scenery further north in Mpumalanga, all at your doorstep. As a touring base for the region, there’s an excellent selection of hotels and restaurants in and around the town.

Travel Tips

Getting to the Kruger and the other attractions became a lot easier thanks to the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA). It’s 23km outside the town and is a sweet little place with thatch-roofed buildings and African bush decor. Shuttle services for game lodges in the area are usually happy to collect guests there, or you can hire a car. Get a 4x4, just to be safe on Mpumalanga’s twisty roads and the dirt roads in the game reserves. Weather-wise the area gets very toasty in November to January, and crowded in December, so rather visit in the cooler months.

Lowveld National Botanical Garden

The gardens ramble through beautiful rocky scenery and along the banks of the Nels and Crocodile Rivers, which meet in a waterfall and a lovely pool. Indigenous ferns and impressive cycads are the top attraction for horticulturalists, while the tropical rainforest and baobab areas impress even the clueless visitor. There’s a restaurant, a visitor’s centre and book and art shops.

You can self-drive, but you’ll have a far more rewarding experience if you book into a lodge that offers game drives with rangers who know where everything lurks. Accommodations ranges from camping to budget-bashing luxury lodges.
Chimp Eden

The Jane Goodall Chimpanzee Sanctuary is 15km from Nelspruit in Umhloti Nature Reserve, and cares for chimps that have been misplaced from their natural habitats. Some have been rescued from the bush meat trade, traded as pets, or freed from circuses. They live in semi-wild enclosures with visitors able to watch from viewpoints overlooking their forest.
