The sixth largest waterfalls in the world have sturdy walkways letting you look down onto the water in the most scenic stretches and the sheer granite walls are stunning. If you catch them in the dry season, the relentless sun turns the raging water into a mere trickle in the chasm below.

This nature reserve has hot springs that are reached after a long drive up rough untarred mountain tracks. The springs are captured in a small concrete pool, but some steps lead down to a far prettier natural rock pool. There are three 4x4 routes that include sand-and-rocky driving, three hiking trails and a mountain bike route. Accommodation is available in chalets perched on the edge of a cliff with magnificent views of the vast Riemvasmaak granite canyon.

A great place for adventuring in comfort, this tented camp offers river rafting, quad biking, horse riding, hiking and abseiling. There’s a swimming pool, hot shower, simple but tasty meals and drinks that are delightfully cheap.

Orange River Wine Cellars produces 30 different wine products and is open for cellar tours and tasting. Cellar tours are only held from January to March. Another option is Bezalel Estate, which produces brandy, as well as wine. It offers informative wine, brandy and liqueur tasting experiences or you can book a group cellar tour. Light meals are also available.

The boat run by Sakkie se Arkie is built like a double-storey floating tea-chest. It’s basically a floating bar which has been cruising along the Orange River since 1997. It serves snacks and drinks so cheap that the party inevitable ends up dancing while the captain does boat twirls in the river.
