Things to do in Douala
- Espace Doual’art. Douala boasts a bourgeoning contemporary art scene. If you're into the arts, or simply enjoy taking in a spot of culture. This gallery and arts incubator is definitely well worth the visit.
- Cafe; Des Palabres. Housed inside a 1905 colonial German residence, this charming cafe on Bonanjo's main square has a great garden terrace perfect for an evening drink, as well as a cool interior with a full menu and an intellectual/alternative vibe. Literary types might like to know that this is the building identified as 'la Pagode' in Céline's Journey to the End of the Night. Read more
- Saga Africa Restaurant. This quaint little restaurant and bar often gets overlooked by tourists, but is in fact one of the best places to eat in the whole of Douala. The cuisine ranges from Western to African and the prices are very reasonable. The setting is truly authentic - the restaurant is built from stained wood poles and has a palm frond roof.
- Le Boj Restaurant. A cool, lounge ambiance and good food are what you can expect from Le Boj. There is also a big screen that shows either music videos or sports matches. This is where the young and middle class professionals of Douala hang out, so it's the best place to meet some locals.
- Marche des Fleurs. This craft market consists of about 50 stalls and most of them sell impressive Cameroonian wood products. Then there are also hundreds of exotic flowers on show. Haggling is advised. This is the perfect place to get a gift before heading home, as it is situated on the main road, heading towards the airport.
