Things to do in Kimberley
- The Big Hole. A trip to Kimberley is not complete without a visit to the Big Hole. It's a manmade 214 metre chasm, with a surface area of 17 hectares and a perimeter of 1.6 kilometres. This is what happens when 2 722 kilograms of diamonds are removed from the ground. The hole forms part of a museum that tells the story of the Diamond Rush in South Africa, in which Kimberley played a large part.
- Haunted Corners and Ghost Trail. If you like ghost stories, you’ll love this tour which takes you to all the haunted corners of the city, including the Honoured Dead Memorial.
- Galeshelwe. Visit one of the oldest Townships in South Africa. Be sure to take the Poetry on da Bus tour, which will take you to the Sol Plaatjie Museum, the home of the late Pan Africanist Congress leader, Robert Sobukwe, and a local shebeen.
- William Humphreys Art Gallery. This art gallery was opened in 1952 and currently houses 247 artworks of African, French, Dutch and Flemish origin. Its layout was ahead of its time and yet it comes across as surprisingly modern today.
