SAA and US Airways to Launch New Code Share Agreement, Expanding Customer Travel Options

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, (18 December 2012) – Today South African Airways (SAA) and US Airways (NYSE: LCC) announced a new bilateral code share agreement after receiving approval from the Department of Transport – South Africa and U.S. Department of Transportation. South African Airways will also receive expanded access to and throughout the United States, along with the convenience of a single-ticket purchase. Conversely, customers traveling on US Airways will gain new access to destinations throughout South Africa and to Dakar, Senegal (subject to US Airways securing approval from Senegalese authorities) with the new code share. SAA’s customers will continue to have the ability to earn and redeem Voyager miles on these new code share flights.

“Through the codeshare agreement with US Airways, South African Airways’ valued clientele will gain new travel choices to markets across the United States via US Airways’ extensive network and hubs in Philadelphia, Charlotte and Phoenix, providing for seamless travel and status recognition through the respective frequent flyer programs. We are looking forward to introducing US Airways customers to our award-winning service, and to working closely with US Airways as our partnership will improve the connections between our respective networks,” says Manoj Papa, SAA acting General Manager for Commercial.

“US Airways’ new code share agreement with its first African code share partner creates a seamless travel experience for our customers travelling to various destinations on the African continent,” said Andrew Nocella, US Airways’ senior vice president, marketing and planning. “US Airways values our current relationship with South African Airways as a Star Alliance partner and now as a code share partner, we look forward to strengthening this partnership.”

SAA’s customers will have access to US Airways’ hub cities of Charlotte in North Carolina and Phoenix as well as various destinations within the United States. Equally, US Airways customers will have access to SAA’s hub in Johannesburg as well as convenient connections to Cape Town, Durban, East London and Port Elizabeth in South Africa.  Customers will also have access to Dakar, Senegal via SAA’s Washington-Johannesburg service.  Specific connection information is below:
