Hermanus Whale Festival
Situated in Walker Bay, near the Southern–most tip of Africa, you’ll find Hermanus, a place that offers some of the best shore–based whale–watching opportunities in the world. Southern Right Whales are the stars of this incredible annual whale festival – a must–see for all nature lovers.
During the festival, the Hermanus cliff tops around the bay are packed with eager spectators, although quieter spots can be found a short way out of town. The trick is to get up early in the morning when waters are calmer as this is when and the whales come close to shore, spring out of the water and dive back down leaving nothing but a mountain of spray.
Hermanus even has its own whale–crier, who is able to communicate in morse code. At the blow of his kelp horn, locals and tourists alike scamper like children in the direction of the sound for a chance to get a front–row seat during this whale–watching extravaganza!
In addition to the whale–watching, the festival offers visitors a host of environmental activities, along with a sports agenda that includes the exciting Whale Run Half Marathon.

Notting Hill Carnival
The very first Notting Hill Carnival took place in 1964 when London’s Caribbean Community introduced the carnival as a way to ease racial tensions. Since then, it has become a popular and colourful annual event that is celebrated by more than two million Londoners from all backgrounds.
It is the world’s second largest street party after the Rio Carnival held in Brazil. The carnival is full of festivities that include costume parades, a steel band, jazz and reggae performances, and countless street vendors selling exotic Caribbean food for all to enjoy.
