Baggage restriction information
There are a number of items, some of them not so obvious, which could pose a risk if taken onboard. Find out which items are classified as dangerous goods, what is permitted and what you need to declare at the airport.
Dangerous goods
For the safety of our passengers and crew, do not pack the following items in either your hand luggage or checked baggage:
- Lithium batteries or pyrotechnic devices
- Disabling devices containing an irritant or incapacitating substance, such as mace, pepper spray, etc.
- Corrosives
- Gases Flammable liquids
- Flammable solids
- Organic peroxides
- Infectious substances
- Toxic substances
- Magnetised materials
- Oxidising materials
- Radioactive materials
- Explosives and incendiary substances and devices
- Ammunition
- Blasting caps
- Detonators and fuses
- Mines, grenades and other explosive military stores
- Fireworks and other pyrotechnics
- Smoke-generating canisters and smoke generating cartridges
- Dynamite, gunpowder and plastic explosives
- Miscellaneous, including asbestos, dry ice, engines, etc.

Electronic Cigarettes (e-cigarettes)
The use of electronic, simulated smoking materials including cigarettes, pipes and cigars, is prohibited on all SAA flights. However, they are permitted in your cabin baggage for all SAA / SAA connecting flights. In the event of cabin baggage being removed and placed in the cargo compartment, you are requested to remove all Lithium Ion batteries from the cabin baggage and carry on board the aircraft.

Transporting liquids
If you are travelling overseas, you will need to follow the new international security regulations that limit the quantity of liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) in your hand luggage. Please make sure that the liquids you carry on board are packaged and transported in the following manner:
- Liquids, gels and aerosols must be kept in containers of 100ml each.
- They must be packed in a 20x20cm transparent, re-sealable plastic bag.
- Only one bag is allowed per passenger, and it must be shown at airport security.
- Exemptions will be made for medications, baby products, and special dietary requirements. Duty free purchases such as cigarettes, liquor and perfume are also permitted in reasonable quantities.

Restricted items
To facilitate your travel, kindly refer to the links below identifying specific security restrictions:
- Car / Motorcycle Parts, Plasma Screens and Televisions – At no time may these items be accepted as part of the Passengers Free Baggage Allowance. These items must be sent as cargo only.
- The carriage of Christmas Crackers and poppers are restricted to allowing a maximum of one (x1) packet of standard sized Christmas Crackers to be packed in checked baggage. The packet may not exceed twelve (12) crackers. These crackers must be commercially manufactures, sealed and contained in the manufacturers original packaging. HOMEMADE crackers are strictly forbidden for carriage.
- The carriage of personal portable motorized small vehicles know by various different names including mini-Segway hover board, air wheel, solo wheel, balance wheel, small balance wheel and breeze boards are powered by lithium ion batteries. These devices are banned from SAA aircraft with immediate effect and MAY NOT be carried as cabin or checked baggage.
- The carriage of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 device is strictly prohibited and may not be carried by passengers on their person, in carry-on baggage, in checked baggage or as cargo.
