New security measures cause long lines at Brazil airports
 
Brasilia, July 15th, 2016 – Considered a priority for the Brazilian Agency of Civil Aviation (ANAC), security of the air transport involves a series of important inspection procedures, such as, search of passengers to have access to restricted areas at the airports (embark areas, track and aircrafts) and the inspection of baggage. Such procedures of security are standardly adopted globally.
 
From July 18th, 2016 (Monday), such measures of security will be even more present at the Brazilian airports and it is  very important that passengers contributes for an efficient and secure embark. The procedures that passengers will be subject to are: go through security portal; physical search (or go through body scanner); removal of notebooks from hand luggage; search of the hand luggage by x-ray machine and opening of the hand luggage for inspection.
 
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q. Where will the personal search of passengers be conducted?
A. In a public area, at the moment of the inspection. If the passenger requests, it can be done at a reserved area with the presence of a witness

Q. Will children be subjected to the search?
A. Yes, However, the minimum age is privileged/ confidential for security reasons

Q. Can I refuse to be submitted to a physical search?
A. Yes, however the refusal will prevent the passenger from accessing the embarkation area.

Q. Can any  person be submitted to the physical search, including authorities?
A. Yes, the search is a security procedure and there’s no distinction among passengers

Q. What is the procedure in case any suspicious object is found?
A. The Security Agent will ask you more information about the suspicious object. If necessary the passenger will be asked to give further information to the Federal Police.

Q. Such security procedures will be valid at all Brazilian airports?
A. Yes

Q. Will passengers on domestic and international flights  be subjected to the inspection measures?
A. Yes

Q. Will stripsearch  be done?
A. No

Q. When will such measures be put in place?
A. As from July 18th, 2016

Q. Will the search be done by a Security Agent of the same sex as the passenger?
A. Yes

Q. How were the Security Agents trained to do the security procedures?
A. The Security Agents are trained and certified to do the security procedures accordingly to the legislation in place

Q. How are passengers subjected to a search selected?
A. All passengers will be subjected to the physical search. The method of selection is defined by a confidential regulation

Q. Will disabled passengers also be searched?
A. Yes

Q. Will measures be adopted to mitigate possible queues?
A. Yes. The airport authorities are aware of such procedures and will adopt measures to speed up the process for all passengers

Q. Are similar measures adopted in other countries?
A. Yes. Such measures are adopted globally

Q. Will the physical search be similar to the ones adopted by the Federal Police?
A. Yes.  Such measures will be done to guarantee that passengers do not carry prohibited items

Q. When removing the notebook from the hand luggage, will other electronic items have to be removed as well?
A. No. By principle only notebooks will be asked to be removed from hand luggage. However, in case the security agent has any doubt about the content at the hand luggage, he can ask the passenger to remove any other item for inspection

Q. Has there been any change on the items permitted or prohibited as hand luggage?
A. No

Q. Is there any alternative to a physical search?
A. The body  scanner can be used. In this situation, in case the Security Agent has any additional doubt a body search can be requested

Q. Why  will I be obliged to remove my notebook from my hand luggage?
A. It is because the notebook prevents the visualization of other items inside the hand luggage when it passes through the XRay

Q. Can I refuse to open my hand luggage for inspection?
A. If the passenger refuses to open the hand luggage he/she will not have access to the embarkation area

Q. Why are these security measures being adopted now?
A. Such  measures are implemented as per the update of the regulations about security on civil aviation against illicit, external acts and are necessary to enhance the security of the air transportation for all passengers

Q. Are these measures related to the Olympic Games or any other external factors?
A. No
