Yellow Fever Warning

A yellow fever outbreak was detected in Angola late in December 2015 where 2, 149 suspected and confirmed cases were reported including 277 deaths.

Emergency vaccination campaign in Luanda province started early February 2016. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the current yellow fever outbreak in Angola as grade 2 emergency.
Currently, Yellow fever cases have been exported from Angola to the following countries Mauritania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and China. South Africa is at risk of the disease being introduced since the mosquito vector exists in the country and Ports of entry receive frequent travelers arriving from Angola on a daily basis.

WHO recommends yellow fever vaccination for all travelers from 9 months old in areas where there is evidence of persistent yellow fever virus transmission. The yellow fever certificate is now valid for life.

PLEASE NOTE: YELLOW FEVER VACCINATION IS NOW VALID FOR LIFE IN SOUTH AFRICA

NB: Proof of vaccination is required for travelers from Y/F risk or sometimes in transit in those countries with high risk.

NB: Passengers in transit for less than 12 hours in the airport with high risk of yellow fever transmission do not require vaccination.

South African ports of entry will have increased Yellow Fever surveillance activities for travelers arriving from countries affected by the outbreak to ensure prevention of importation of Yellow Fever.
