Travel advisory - Food

Food travel information

A big part of your travel experience is about sampling the local cuisine. Food is inseparable from culture, and is part of what makes your encounter with a new destination that much more memorable and authentic.

But without the necessary precautions, it can be the thing that turns your dream adventure into a nightmare you won’t easily forget.

Here are some ways to avoid the stomach ache.

Do’s

  • Always wash your hands before eating - a rule of common sense which applies wherever you go!
  • Only eat well-cooked food that is still hot when it is served.
  • Check out the restaurant patronage. The larger the crowd, the fresher the food tends to be to accommodate the high turnover.
  • Drink plenty of clean water, especially in hotter climates than you are used to.
  • Use bottled or purified water for drinking and brushing your teeth.

Don’ts

  • Swim in polluted or contaminated water.
  • Eat raw foods, especially shellfish and salads.
  • Eat food from street vendors so soon after landing.
  • If you must have food on the go, give your digestive system a chance to acclimatise to the new diet.
  • Indulge in unpasteurized dairy products.
  • Put ice in your drinks if you are unsure of the source.
